Chase

“I spy with my little eye,” Dannika mused, “something yellow.”

Closing my eyes and pretending to sleep had no effect. She just kept on talking.

“It’s the yellow lines in the road,” she snarked in response to my silence. “Not that there’s much else to see out here.”

Oh, there was plenty to see. She may have had better night vision than me but during the day, I could see a mouse running through a field from a hundred yards in the sky. When I looked at Astrid, I liked to take in the details of the freckles on her skin, the patterns in her blue irises.

If I had to guess, Dannika’s chattiness with me indicated she had no idea about the kiss. She sat in the car while I said goodbye to Astrid and the guys. Throughout our drive, she sometimes touched my shoulder or leg during her long-winded stories. I figured she was just a touchy-feely person and fought down my eagle’s urge to snap at her. It wasn’t her touch that I wanted.

“How much farther out?” I mumbled during a rare moment of silence.

“You tell me, dude. We’re approaching the city of Eugene now. You’re gonna have to give me directions on where to park.”

I returned my seat upright and looked at the map on my phone. We had a good four hours until daylight. Hopefully that would give us enough time to locate where Silas was being held so I could get a bird’s eye view.

Ignoring Dannika’s random quips and remarks, I gave her directions to a highway rest stop a few miles outside of the city. The parking lot was empty, a wide open area with only her car there. Being exposed made me nervous but it was far enough away from humans where we could shift safely. And if anyone pulled in, we’d be able to see them from far away. Without knowing the area well, it was our best option.

I hopped out the moment she parked, pulling my shirt over my head and quickly rolling my clothes into a tight bundle.

“Nice tattoo,” she said from behind me. “What’s that all about?”

“Nothing.”

I peeled off my shoes, socks, and pants, rolled everything up with my shirt and placed my clothing in the passenger seat. From my peripheral vision, I saw Dannika undressing too and quickly turned around to give her privacy.

“You know where to go from here?” I asked, the first feathers of my shift sprouting from my hair follicles.

“Yeah, I should be goouurd.” Her speech changed as her mouth shifted.

Letting the shift take over me, I extended my arms to the sides as they became wings. My human body shrank down and my feet turned into fearsome talons curling over the parking lot ground. I kept my wings extended as the shift completed, stretching out the muscles that stiffened more due to my injury.

My wings were balanced in strength now, it was just the stiffness that I had to work through. As I stretched, a curious creature crawled around the car toward me.
